Fourth Grade Team

Fourth Graders have a visit from Aunt Hattie!

Aunt Hattie comes to visit with fourth graders four times over a 4-week period. The visit from Aunt Hattie works into the fourth grade unit on Nebraska, studies of the westward movement, and leads up to the fourth graders visit to Heritage School.

During her visits they learn to make candles, quilts, and button spinner toys. The students learn to do chores such as shelling corn, cutting up apples, making biscuits, doing laundry, churning butter, and everyone’s favorite ‚ gathering up buffalo biscuits for a fuel source.

During one of the visits, retired Media Specialist Artis Moody comes and talks to the fourth graders about Native Americans. They also learn to make spirit bags or medicine pouches.

During the last visit the students are to choose what Aunt Hattie is to take with her and what is to stay back as she packs the wagon for her trip westward. The students are required to tell why something should be taken and why some things need to remain behind.

Arnold School is the only school in Lincoln that does this hands on activities over a four-week span. Other schools may do some of the things on a smaller scale but nothing to this extent.

Retired media specialist, Artis Moody, visited to share about the Native American heritage.

There were numerous chores required in Aunt Hatties era.
